Every Jamaican family came from somewhere, to Jamaica. The paperwork remembers which somewhere. In 1816, colonial authorities forced every enslaver in Jamaica to register every person they held — name, age, estate, parish, African-born or Creole. It was written as an accounting tool. It survived as the closest thing our families have to a census. This channel goes through those records. Surname by surname, parish by parish: what the estates were buying, which stretch of the West and Central African coast they were buying from, and what the people written into those books did about it. If your name is Campbell, Smith, Gayle or Hylton — if your people are from St. Elizabeth, Trelawny or Portland — there is something written down about your family that almost nobody in it has ever read. New videos weekly. Sources listed in every description. 📜 Jamaican surnames · Jamaican parishes · African ancestry · Caribbean genealogy · Black history
