Low-competition YouTube niches: where small channels still get views
A niche with few channels is not automatically easy. I compared how crowded each niche is with what channels at 5k-50k subscribers actually get per video.

The YouTube niches that combine low competition with real demand are Trivia & Weird Facts, Documentary & Film, Property Restoration, Architecture, Nature & Wildlife and Scripted Drama & Skits. Each has fewer than 800 active creator channels in the TubeAI database, yet channels there with 5k to 50k subscribers get 1.6x to 2.9x the typical median views per video. But few channels is not the same as low competition: Crypto has only 582 active channels, and its small channels get about a third of the typical views.
I pulled every active, served creator channel in the TubeAI research database (158,643 channels across 79 niches) and measured two things per niche: how crowded it is, and what a small channel actually gets per video once it is there. The second number is the one most niche lists skip.

How I measured competition and demand
Competition is the number of active creator channels in a niche: channels the TubeAI classifier judged to be genuine creators, with a long-form upload in the last 180 days. Dormant channels do not compete for today's viewers, so they are left out.
Demand is harder. Big niches look rewarding just because they contain big channels, so I compared like with like: only channels with 5,000 to 50,000 subscribers, and for each niche the median of their average views per video. That answers the question a new creator actually has: once I have a modest audience here, what does a typical upload get?
I also used views per subscriber (average views divided by subscribers). Across all small channels the median is 0.47, so a typical upload reaches about half as many people as the channel has subscribers. In the best niches it reaches more people than that.

Niche size and reach are barely related
If fewer channels meant more views, the chart below would slope down from left to right. It does not. The quiet end of the chart holds both the best and the worst niches for small channels.

The quiet niches where small channels win
These are the niches with fewer than 1,500 active channels where small channels get at least 1.5x the typical 6,791 median views. The last column is the effort signal: how often the median channel in the niche uploads.
| Niche | Active channels | Median views (5k-50k subs) | vs typical | Views per subscriber | Uploads per week |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trivia & Weird Facts | 182 | 19,888 | 2.9x | 1.17 | 0.78 |

| Military & Combat Survival | 422 | 10,035 | 1.5x | 0.59 | 0.78 |
Three patterns stand out:
- Explainer and story niches lead. Trivia, Documentary, Architecture and Nature all reward well-researched videos, and in Trivia and Documentary a typical small channel reaches more viewers per upload than it has subscribers.
- Workshop niches are a quiet cluster. Woodworking, Metalworking & Forging, Boats & Marine and Property Restoration each have a few hundred active channels and clear 1.5x. The median channel in Woodworking and Metalworking uploads about once every three weeks: the build is the barrier.
- Kids Content needs a caveat. Its reach is strong, but videos made for kids run under YouTube's restrictions on comments and personalized ads, which changes the business behind the views.
The common thread is effort. These niches are quiet because each video is expensive to make, not because nobody wants to watch. That is a moat you can work with, if the format suits you.

The other three corners
A niche can be quiet because viewers are not there. It can also be crowded and still pay, if the work keeps most people out. The table shows clear examples of each.
| Niche | Corner | Active channels | Median views (5k-50k subs) | vs typical |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto | Quiet for a reason | 582 | 2,398 | 0.35x |
| Religion & Spirituality | Quiet for a reason | 695 | 3,527 | 0.52x |
| News & Current Events | Quiet for a reason | 127 | 3,884 | 0.57x |
| Cybersecurity | Quiet for a reason | 296 | 4,862 | 0.72x |
| Animation & VFX | Crowded but rewarding | 4,830 | 19,914 | 2.9x |
| Tech | Crowded but rewarding | 2,602 | 11,590 | 1.7x |
| ASMR | Crowded but rewarding | 2,760 | 11,039 | 1.6x |
| Automotive | Crowded but rewarding | 7,786 | 8,747 | 1.3x |

| Food | Crowded and hard | 4,012 | 4,575 | 0.67x |
Crypto is the clearest warning. It looks wide open with 582 active channels, but a typical small channel there gets about a third of the cross-niche views. Business, Health & Fitness and Food sit in the hardest corner: thousands of channels, and small channels below the bar.
Gaming deserves its own note. It is by far the most crowded niche, with 33,765 active channels, yet small gaming channels get 7,657 median views, slightly above the typical bar. Crowded and impossible are not the same thing. I broke the niche down by channel size in the gaming YouTube benchmarks.
How to find a quiet niche for your own channel
Niche labels are broad. The real opportunities are usually sub-niches inside them, so use the table above as a starting point, not a final answer.
A five-step check before you commit to a niche
Count the active channels, not all of them
Only channels that uploaded in the last six months compete for today's viewers. A niche full of abandoned channels is quieter than it looks.
Check what small channels get
Look at channels at 5k to 50k subscribers. If their typical upload clears about 6,800 views, the demand is real for someone your size.
Compare views to subscribers
A typical small channel reaches about half its subscriber count per upload. Niches where uploads beat the subscriber count are pulling in new viewers.
Price in the effort
Quiet, high-reach niches tend to need slow, expensive videos. Be honest about whether you can upload at the niche's pace for a year.
Go one level down
Pick a sub-niche, then study its outlier videos and formats before you film anything.
If you are weighing whether to start at all, I looked at that question directly in is it too late to start a YouTube channel. For a niche's direction of travel rather than its size, see the fastest-growing YouTube niches. And because the quiet niches reward slow, careful work, how often you should upload matters as much as which niche you choose.
Frequently asked questions
What is the least competitive niche on YouTube?
By channel count alone, niches like News & Current Events, Historical Recreation and Trivia & Weird Facts have under 200 active creator channels each in the TubeAI database. Only some of them reward small channels, though. Trivia & Weird Facts does (19,888 median views for channels with 5k-50k subscribers); News does not (3,884).
Are low-competition niches easier to grow in?
Not automatically. Niche size and small-channel views are barely related. Crypto has 582 active channels but its small channels get about a third of the typical views, while Animation & VFX has 4,830 channels and the highest small-channel views of any niche.
How many views does a small YouTube channel usually get?
Across 94,849 active creator channels with 5k to 50k subscribers, the median is 6,791 average views per video, or about 0.47 views per subscriber per upload.
Why do the best quiet niches have so few channels?
Mostly effort. Woodworking, Metalworking, Documentary and Animation all require slow production; the median Woodworking channel uploads about once every three weeks. Fewer people can sustain that, so fewer channels compete.
Should I pick a niche only because it has low competition?
No. Use competition and small-channel reach together, then check that you can make the videos at the niche's pace. A niche you cannot sustain is not an opportunity.
